Our pets get the same comfort we get from our surroundings. When we move from our home it can be stressful for us and them. There are steps you can take before, during and after moving to help your four-legged friends adjust. Good Time Moving & Storage offer some helpful tips below.
Start Preparing for the Move
Most of the time we know about a move weeks or months beforehand. This gives you time to carefully pack your belongings and get ready for moving day. This gives you time to prepare your pet for what’s to come.
- Get used to the crate or kennel they will use during the move. Place the crate or kennel in your home so they can get used to it when they still feel comfortable.
- You can avoid any added stress by sticking to your normal routine as much as possible.
- Take your pet to the vet to make sure they are healthy to travel. They can also prescribe medication that can help with nausea and stress.
- Take you pet on short car rides is they aren’t used to being in the car.
- Make sure your pet has updated tags in case they get lost during the move.
- Schedule playtime as moving day approaches to prevent feelings of neglect.
Moving Day Tips
Moving day will be one of the busiest days your pet will probably ever experience. There are steps you can take to limit the fear and stress they will encounter.
- Keep your pets out of the way. The hustle and bustle of moving day can be a lot for a pet to handle. Keep your pet in a quiet calming place during this busy time.
- Remember the daily routine. If your pet is used to a walk every day, then try and make it happen on moving day.
- Don’t forget a favorite toy. Putting an item in the crate that your pet loves will help ease anxiety during the move.
- Keep your pet safe. A strange place can cause your pet to act differently. They can become scared and run. Keep your pet in their crate or on a leash during the move.
- Pack a moving kit. Make sure your pet has snacks, medications, special toys and clean-up bags for the trip.
- Have some of your pet’s belongings at the new house. A great way to help your pet feel more comfortable in the new home is to have some familiar objects there when you arrive.
Pets Adjusting to the New House
It will take our pets some time to adjust to a new home.
- Take it slow. Introduce your pet to one room at a time.
- Look for signs of stress. Watch your pet for loss of appetite, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea and isolation.
- Keep a routine. Schedules are important for your pet. They will adjust more quickly if you can keep to the old schedule.
- Avoid added stress. Try to limit additional stressors during the adjustment period.
