You are in control of most of what you’ll pay for a move. You choose when to move, what to move and what to leave behind. In addition, you choose what to do yourself and what to hire movers for. Thankfully, there are things you can do to save some money in the process. Good Time Moving & Storage offers helpful tips below.
How to Save Money when Moving
1. Time of Year of Move. The time of year you plan on moving will determine how much you’ll need to spend. If you choose to move between Memorial Day and Labor Day, you’ll have to pay more. This is the time of year that the country’s roads and highways are very busy. High demand result in higher moving charges with the increased demand for moving vehicle and supplies. Try and schedule your move in the fall or spring. Further savings come when you move the second or third week of the month because most people plan on the first or last week.
2. Move Less, Save More. Long distance moves are calculated by the weight of the cargo. You can have a big impact on the final cost by making the load a little lighter. Start donating items you just don’t need anymore, consider replacing larger items when you get to your new home and have a garage sale to make some money that can go towards the cost of your move.
3. Use Free Moving Supplies. Stay within budget by trying to acquire free moving supplies rather than spending money on them. Many retailers will have boxes you can use for free. You may even be able to get some old newspapers to wrap fragile items. Check out Craigslist to cheaper supplies if you can’t get them for free.
4. Use Moving Discounts. Another downfall to traveling during the busy season is that moving companies don’t have incentive to offer any deals. They might actually charge more. Immediately after Labor Day is the best time to snag a deal. Many companies even bundle products and services for an even better deal. Use the internet to find deals and Internet-only promotions. Military veterans and AAA members may enjoy additional savings.
5. Get Help Packing & Moving. It doesn’t hurt to ask, and you can save some money. You can hire moving labor but ask family and friends first. Just remember that it may not be all it’s cracked up to be. People don’t like to move themselves, much less help others during their free time. They probably won’t be as careful with your belongings and they might get hurt in the process. That’s the last thing you want to deal with.
