When you are preparing to make a move, there are many plans and things to organize. Packing is one of the primary facets. To help you organize your packing, we at Good Time Moving & Storage would like to offer some tips in the packing order of your things.
What to Pack First when Moving House
Out of Season Items. If you’re not going to wear it, pack it, winter coats in summer, tank tops, and shorts in winter. For seasonal decors like Halloween decorations or Christmas ornaments and items like grill accessories or camping gear, the same applies.
Surplus / Backups. In the cupboard, you always try to keep a few extra sponges under the sink or backup rolls of paper towels. You’re unlikely to use them any time soon but being prepared isn’t a bad thing. They’re ready to replenish the stockpile in your new digs, pack them up.
Papers, Old Photos, Etc. You’re not going to need them in the next few weeks, so pack the baby scrapbook or the craft project you got for Mother’s Day might be precious.
Décor. Before you move, you can probably survive with bare walls for a few weeks while it might be nice to look at. make sure you have the time to pack them carefully, securely, and safely as you pack your artwork and other decorative odds and ends early.
Special Dinnerware. You will probably not be hosting right before you move. Take the time to carefully pack extra set of flatware and linens you like to take out when guests come over.
Extra Linens. You are likely not going to need every set of bedding you have or every towel a week or so out from your move. Select the linens you plan on using in the next week and the extras, pack.
Gadgets / Kitchenware. Pack the pans, pots, and utensils you don’t use on a regular basis. Before a big move, you’re probably not going to have the sudden urge to bake a cake a week or two.
Entertainment / Media. Board games, movies, CDs, books, can be packed early in the process. These items are worth thinning out before a long-distance move too.
Electronics. Some of the last things you want to pack include computers, TVs, and cell phone chargers. You may require assistance to pack them in a way that reduces the risk of damage. To prevent them from getting lost in the shuffle, set aside any chargers and accessories.
Toiletries, Medications & First Aid. A few basic first aid supplies in case of emergency, like band aids, painkillers, etc should be set aside and kept with until the move. But extras, as well extra toiletries and other items like backup rolls of toilet paper or backup bars of soap. Make sure you are moving includes prescriptions, the emergency kits, and small quantities of oral care, skin care, and hair care.
School, Office & Craft/Art Supplies. You’re unlikely to need that box of 24 crayons and your stash of paperclips right before moving, though you might need a few basics. All you will need is notepad, a pair of scissors, packing tape, and a permanent marker.
Cleaning Supplies. Any cleaning chemicals are better left behind to avoid hazardous spills in the move. Donate them or toss them.
