During a move it is the fragile items that are often most at risk for damage. Fragile items can easily break during packing, moving or unpacking if they are not secure. Those who have had a valuable item break during a move know how easily fragile items can break during a move. If this is your first time moving, or if you are looking for ways to better protect your fragile valuables, Good Time Moving & Storage will share a few simple tips on how to pack and protect your fragile items.
What to Use to Pack Fragile Items
The first step in packing your fragile items is knowing you will want to prepare in advance. Packing fragile items properly takes time and is often a good place to start. You will want to invest in the right materials. Make sure to get packing paper, plenty of bubble wrap, pliable cardboard, packing tape and labels. Make sure to get help for larger items, and you may even want to use moving blankets to provide extra padding.
Packing Tips for Fragile, Breakable Items
- Plates: Plate are notorious for breaking during a move. When it comes to plates you will want to use small to medium size boxes. Do not use too big of a box as it is heavy to carry which increases the risk of dropping the box. Additionally, the weight can cause the plates to crack. When packing plates, make sure to wrap the plate in bubble wrap and place packing paper in between each plate. You will want to make sure the plates do not wiggle inside the box. You should also avoid overpacking a box.
- Glassware: You will want to wrap each glass or cup with packing paper. There are moving boxes with slots for cups. However, you can fill the space between the cups with bubble wrap. Again use small to medium size boxes, and make sure the cups do not wiggle.
- Lamps: Smaller lamps should be packed in their own box along with the lamp shade. Wrap the lamp in bubble wrap. You will want to wrap the lampshade from the outside with paper and then pack the inside space. This will prevent the lamp shade from getting holes or punctures.
- Pictures and Frames: Pictures and frames can be difficult to pack. You will want to find a box that fits your frames and pictures. For overly large pictures, frames, or paintings, you will probably not be able to box them. Therefore you will need to take extra steps. For smaller pictures, you will want to wrap them in moving paper and bubble wrap. Place them in a box standing up right, just like how they hang on the wall. This position will help prevent the glass or picture from breaking under weight and pressure. Larger paintings or pictures, you will want to wrap in bubble wrap and again with a moving blanket.
